First Time at First Flower

April 05, 2019 by Michelle Haviland

It’s always exciting getting to see a ‘hidden’ garden. Georgia’s farm is not only tucked back on a hill behind her house, but it’s less than a mile from the Great Barrington mini-metropolis! I had no idea it was there, even though the gardens reach far back and provide the Sheffield Market with a wide variety of delicious vegetables and beautiful flowers.

First Flower rests on less than an acre but you couldn’t tell by its yield. Flowers, herbs, heirloom vegetables of all kinds and some stunning architectural treasures flow from Georgia’s property and she is making the most of her space. Not only does she also can and make jams and jellies, but she uses her small garage to start seeds and plans to use it for even more creations and plantings. Her husband’s profession as a stonemason is evident throughout the property, and my favorite sight was the gorgeous stone sink they use for washing vegetables and cleaning supplies. She says he brought it home one day and she’s loved it ever since (the bird fixture is a family heirloom).

Georgia makes it a point to not rely on petroleum in all its forms, and foster the soil. She is bringing small-scale agriculture back to its roots, while keeping current on sustainable practices. As I peeked in on her seedlings sprouting in the greenhouse, we both felt the excitement and possibility that spring brings. I cannot wait to see what she brings to the market this year.
